If you are travelling to any of the counties that are listed in the Hague country list you need apostille / Mea attestation for your personal documents. MEA Attestation process is getting Attestation from Ministry of External Affairs on the original or photocopies of the documents.

Depending on the type of visa or your purpose, you are travelling you need to produce different documents to the authorities

Work Visa – for work visa you need to get Degree Certificate Attestation, ( PCC ) Police clearance certificate Attestation, medical Certificate Attestation, Experience letter Attestation.

Dependent Visa – for dependent you need to show legally you are the dependent of the main applicant – This is mainly applicable to spouse and Children.

Marriage Certificate Attestation, Birth Certificate attestation, Police clearance certificate attestation, and medical certificate attestation are mandatory.

  2. Notary Attestation – After the local verification the documents are submitted to notary attestation for the originality check, once it is proved that the document submitted is original or photocopy the appropriate attestation is done.
  3. State Attestation / SDM Attestation  – 3rd step you can either do State attestation also Known as HRD Attestation or SDM Attestation depending on the requirement of the authority to whom you are submitting the documents. If the authorities specifically mention that they need HRD / State attestation then we should get that attestation from HRD Only.
    If it is not mentioned then we go for SDM Attestation.

  3. MEA Attestation – After COC attestation the documents are submitted to the Ministry of External affairs for Final attestation. MEA is the highest body in India that can attest the documents. 

If you are doing business with Hague countries then the above 3 steps are enough to make commercial documents legal. But if you are moving to non hague countries then you need an additional step called Embassy attestation for the document.

  1. Embassy Attestation – After getting MEA Attestation the commercial documents are submitted to the Embassy of the target country to obtain Embassy attestation. For example if you are travelling to UAE you will be submitting the documents to the UAE Embassy to get UAE embassy attestation, for Qatar it will be Qatar embassy attestation.

Validity of Attestation done in Mumbai

As per the government of India, Attestation done once is valid as long as the document is Valid. But for foreign authorities to whom you are submitting the documents need the reverification of the documents. So in international platforms it is considered that the validity of the attestation is 6 Months to 1 Year.
Some documents such as Police clearance certificate ( PCC ) document validity is 3 months only hence the attestation is also valid for 3 months.Check with the experts before proceeding.
