Apostille for Slovakia: Process
Now you know what are the documents that need an apostille for your visit to Slovakia. Let us explore the steps followed to get an apostille stamp on your personal, educational and commercial documents in detail.
In India there are two methods to get an apostille from the Ministry of external affairs. They are:
The only difference in these two methods is the authority attesting the document. Before going through the different attestation methods in detail, first see the steps involved in apostille attestation.
- Step 1: Notarization
- Step 2: SDM/ State Department
- Step 3: MEA Verification
- Step 4: MEA Apostille
We will explain each step involved in apostille attestation for Slovakia below.
Notarization
Notarization is a common process for all methods of getting an apostille. A notary is an authorized person who can verify the validity of documents. The notary will verify the document and attest it with signature and seal.
State Attestation Method: Notary is not mandatory. Some states may not require this step of authentication.
SDM Attestation Method: Notary is a mandatory step.
2. SDM/State Department
This is the step where the document undergoes a thorough verification.
Once the notary is done you will have options to either go through SDM verification or state verification depending on the country you are travelling to. Below are the details on when to use SDM and State verification.
SDM Attestation: SDM is Sub Divisional Magistrate, SDM attestation used for all types of documents except certain commercial documents that require mandatory chamber of commerce attestation. Sub divisional magistrate verifies the document and attest it.
State Department Attestation: State department attestation is followed usually for personal and educational documents. Some countries or authorities specifically require attestation from state departments instead of SDM. In case of personal documents the state home department attest the document after doing verification with the authority that issued the document.
For educational documents, the state human resource department conducts a verification at the university to check seal/signatures on the documents. After verification, the HRD department will attest the document.
The state attestation method is a longer process which may take around 30 days to finish. However, the SDM method is faster and easier which can be obtained within 4 to 14 days.
Depending on the country you are travelling you need to choose between these 2 verifications. Ask your apostille service provider for the suggestion regarding the same.
3.MEA Apostille
The ministry of external affairs India in New Delhi alone is authorized to provide an apostille certification on your documents. Thus a document attested through either of the three methods will be submitted to MEA. The ministry will conduct a final verification and affix signature and apostille stamp on your document. Now your document is legalized for use in Slovakia or any other Hague country.
