Apostille for use in Lithuania: Steps Explained

1.Notarization: Notarization is a common initial step for authenticating all types of documents using any method. Notary is an authorized official who can check the authenticity of public documents. SDM Authentication Method: Notary attestation is mandatory for SDM authentication methods.

State Authentication Method: Notary requirements for state department authentication vary depending on the state. Some states accept documents without a notary seal for the apostille verification process. 

 

  1. SDM/State Department Attestation: This is the step where an extensive verification on your documents happens. Let us explore the process of both methods in detail.

SDM Attestation: SDM is sub divisional magistrate. You can get an apostille following this method. In this step, a sub divisional magistrate from your locality or Delhi will verify and attest your documents. This is a cheaper and faster method of apostille attestation.

The time taken for SDM attestation is usually from 3 to 14 days.

State Attestation: Some countries such as Taiwan or your employer or university may mandate state level verification. In such cases you need to follow the state attestation.

State attestation method is usually used for verifying personal and educational documents.

The state department of home affairs verifies personal documents such as birth certificates. They verify the authenticity of documents and signatures with the concerned district level and local level authorities. After verification, the state home department attest the document with a sign and seal.

State human resources department(HRD)  verifies and attests educational documents. The department verifies the signature and originality of documents with the university that issued your certificate. After verification HRD signs and seals on the document.

State attestation takes from 7 days to 30 days. 

If you want the apostille to be done quickly and cheaply, the apostille through SDM is better. If the country / University / authority mandate state level authentication then always go for state level authentication even though it takes more time.

3.MEA Apostille: Your document attested from the state department/SDM/ has already undergone a detailed verification process. Now, your apostille service provider will submit your documents to the ministry of external affairs. The ministry conducts a final verification. Subsequently, a certificate/stamp known as an apostille stamp is placed on the backside of your document. This makes your document legally valid for use in Lithuania.

Apostille for Commercial Document Process

Attestation from the chamber of commerce is mandatory for most of the commercial documents. Chamber of commerce is a business organization that connects government and businesses.
