Apostille Official Definition

Think of an apostille as an international “stamp of approval” that verifies your document is genuine and was issued by a legitimate authority. Without this certification, your documents may not be accepted by foreign governments, educational institutions, or businesses.

An Apostille is an official certification issued under the 1961 Hague Convention that verifies the authenticity of a public document for use in Hague member countries. It confirms the validity of the signature, seal, and issuing authority, eliminating the need for further legalization. For non-Hague countries, documents require MEA Attestation and  Embassy Legalization to be legally accepted abroad.

Steps to get MEA Apostille in India

A public notary verifies and attests your documents.

This step is a court verification procedure. Sub divisional magistrate verifies the authenticity of documents and attests them.

The ministry of external affairs verifies the document and attestations on it. The MEA attests the document with a seal.

In this step, the MEA will paste a sticker on the back side of the document. This sticker makes the document legally valid in a Hague country without further attestations.
